The Locomotive Stadium ( Russian Локомотив (стадион) ) is a football stadium in the Russian city of Nizhny Novgorod . It has space for 17,856 spectators and served as the home of the Volga Nizhny Novgorod association until its dissolution.

history

The Locomotive Stadium in Nizhny Novgorod , the fifth largest city in Russia with around 1,250,000 inhabitants and the capital of the Volga Federal District , opened in 2000. However, only a new building was built, the original stadium of the same name was built in 1932, but was demolished in 1997, as considerable deficiencies in terms of security and modernity were evident.

Since 2000, the Volga Nizhny Novgorod football club has been using the Lokomotive Stadium as a venue for home games. At the time the sports facility opened, the club was only playing fourth-rate, but that was to change quickly in the following years. In eleven years between 2000 and 2011, they made the steep climb from fourth to first Russian football league, after taking second place behind Kuban Krasnodar in the 1st division in 2010 , which was enough for promotion to the Premjer league . There in the first season with twelfth place in the regular phase did not qualify for the championship round, instead you had to defend yourself in the relegation battle. There Volga Nizhny Novgorod was 14th, which resulted in relegation games against direct relegation. In the playout games Nizhny Novgorod prevailed 2-1 and 0-0 against local rivals FK Nizhny Novgorod and held the class. Also in the following season the league succeeded, so that Volga Nizhny Novgorod can still be found today in the highest Russian football league.

In the past, the Locomotive Stadium also served as a home for another club from Nizhny Novgorod. The Lokomotiv Nizhny Novgorod club, which was dissolved in 2006, played for a long time in the top divisions of the Soviet Union and Russia, but most of it took place during the old locomotive stadium. FK Nizhny Novgorod, whose home stadium only had a capacity of just under 4,000 spectators, occasionally avoided the Lokomotiv stadium for games with greater spectator expectations.

future

After Russia won the bid to host the 2018 World Cup , it became known that Nizhny Novgorod was also planned as the venue. To this end, the new Nizhny Novgorod stadium with a capacity of around 45,000 spectators was built by May 2018 . After it was used for the 2018 World Cup tournament, the home games of the new, local club Olimpijez Nizhny Novgorod will also be played there. How the locomotive stadium will be handled after the soccer world championship cannot be foreseen today.
