Hans-Peter Liese (born May 20, 1965 in Olsberg ) is a German politician and has been a member of the CDU for North Rhine-Westphalia in the European People's Party since 1994 .

Life

After graduating from the Benedictine high school in Meschede , Peter Liese did his military service as a medic in Möhnesee- Echtrop . He then studied in Marburg , Aachen and Bonn medicine and in 1992 was at the human genetics institute of the University of Bonn with the evaluation magna cum laude to the Dr. med. PhD .

After completing his doctorate, he worked for six months in Central America in a state hospital and in development aid projects before he joined the children's clinic in Paderborn as a ward doctor . Between 1994 and 2003 he practiced in a group practice for general medicine and internal medicine.

Peter Liese is Roman Catholic , divorced and has two children. He lives in Meschede .

Peter Liese has been politically active since joining the Junge Union in 1984. At the JU he was a member of the state board of the JU North Rhine-Westphalia from 1988 to 2000. From 1991 to 1997 he was district chairman of the Junge Union Sauer- / Siegerland. In 1987 he also joined the CDU. In the CDU, he has been a member of the state board of the CDU North Rhine-Westphalia since 1997 . Between 1989 and 1994 he was involved in local politics as a member of the Bestwig Municipality Council .

He has been a member of the European Parliament since 1994 . There he was deputy chairman of the Junge Gruppe from 1994 to 1999 and is now deputy chairman of the CDU / CSU group in the European Parliament. He was deputy chairman of the German EPP group in the European Parliament. Since 2012, Liese was also a member of the federal executive committee of the CDU until he no longer stood in the federal executive committee election in December 2018.

Awards

In 2002 Liese was awarded the "big mare guy", the award of the Bäckerinnungs-Verband Westfalen-Lippe for "commitment to European legal norms for small and medium-sized enterprises". He received the Opilio Cardinal Rossi Medal, an award from the Working Group of Catholic Associations in Austria, in 2003. In 2011 Liese received the Energy Efficiency Visionary Award. This is an award from the Alliance for Energy Saving USA and EU and the European Alliance to Save Energy. Liese received the "MEP Award" known as the "Parliamentary Oscar" in 2011. In 2015 he was awarded the Badge of Honor of the German Bakery Trade. The Konrad Martin Medal of the Kolping Society of Diocesan Association Paderborn was awarded to Liese in 2015.

In 2018 Peter Liese was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon.

Memberships

Liese is a member of the Europa-Union parliamentary group European Parliament , of Esperanza - Association for Development Aid , in the Kolping factory as well as in the board of trustees of Don Bosco Mondo .
