The Hans Wilsdorf Bridge listen ? / i ( French: Pont Hans-Wilsdorf ) is a road bridge over the Arve river in the Plainpalais district in the city of Geneva . With this name, the city commemorates the Bavarian entrepreneur Hans Wilsdorf , who founded the watch brand Rolex in Geneva in 1920, founded the Hans Wilsdorf Foundation and died in the city in 1960. The Hans-Wilsdorf-Brücke is the eighth Arve river crossing within Switzerland and at the same time the penultimate river crossing by road before it flows into the Rhône about 750 m later. The bridge connects the two districts of Plainpalais in the northeast and Les Vernets in the southwest as well as the inner-city streets Rue d'Ecole de Médecine , which runs from here in a northeast direction to the Marché de Plainpalais , and the Rue Hans Wilsdorf as a direct extension. Both roads form a straight road axis and are approx. 500 m long including the river crossing.

Building description

The bridge connects roads that are in a 30 km zone. During the planning, care was taken to ensure good permeability for pedestrians and bicycles. For both groups of road users, the fact that they were each given a width of three and a half meters with a total width of 15.5 m placed a high value on the acceptance of the crossing. "The generous dimensions give non-motorized traffic a privileged position and thus integrate the project into the scale of the quarter."

The bridge is enclosed by an ellipsoidal , structured steel girder construction, which is again formed from elliptical and straight, welded hollow box profiles. The building is reminiscent of the Beijing National Stadium designed by the Swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron , known as the “Bird's Nest” . Both the concrete structure for the road surface and the steel structure for the open shell have a mass of 1,500 tons. Zwahlen et Mayr took care of the steel construction .

history

The Passerelle de l'École-de-Médecine , which the Swiss Army had only temporarily built for the nearby barracks, had been at this point since 1952 . Due to construction defects, their use in motor vehicles has been prohibited since August 2007. The Fondation Hans Wilsdorf got involved in the discussion on the future of the bridge and offered a share in the financing.

The construction industry was full of praise after completion. The Swiss Association of Steel Construction Center , the media organ of the Swiss Association of Engineers and Architects , wrote that “the bridge is part of the art of engineering par excellence” because a work of art is only created through the “interaction of statics and architectural expression”.

In 2013 the bridge received the European Steel Design Award
