Hans Brentel (painter)

Johannes "Hans" Brentel (* 1532 in Lauingen ; † December 23, 1614 there ) was a Swabian map painter . He was the father of the painter and sundial maker Georg Brentel the Younger and the map painter Hans Brentel the Younger and a brother of Georg Brentel .

Life

Hans Brentel was most likely a son of Bernhard Brentel, a citizen of Lauingen, whose profession is unknown. Around 1565 he married a certain Anna, with whom he had seven children. Since the same year he was a citizen of the city, worked as a map painter and paid taxes. At first he changed his address frequently, as he lived for rent. From 1575 he lived permanently in Sammlungsgasse , where he bought a house. In January 1598, Hans Brentel visited his brother Georg in Strasbourg , as evidenced by two pages in the register with allegorical depictions of painting and Justitia. They were made on January 20th by a Christoph Christeiner from Augsburg and dedicated to his friend Johannes Brentel from Lauingen. Nothing is known about the visit itself.

After his first wife died on June 10th, 1601 at the age of 60, Hans Brentel married Maria, widow of Hans Manner, on September 28th of the same year. This marriage remained childless. In 1609 Brentel was no longer able to continue working and on June 2 he and his wife were admitted to the hospital in Lauingen for 129 fl 56 kr . The admission fee apparently came from the sale of his house on Sammlungsgasse. Brentel died in this nursing home at the very high age of 82 at the time.
