Hans C. Andersen

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hans Christian Andersen (born March 8, 1940 in New York City ) is an American chemist ( theoretical chemistry , statistical mechanics , computer simulation).

Andersen studied at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with a bachelor's degree in 1962 and a doctorate in physical chemistry in 1966 with Irwin Oppenheim . From 1965 to 1968 he was a Junior Fellow of the Society of Fellow at Harvard. In 1968 he became an assistant professor at Stanford University , where he was given a full professorship in 1980. He was also deputy director of the Center for Material Research there.

He deals with statistical mechanics (including lattice models for the study of liquids), structure and properties of amorphous materials (glass transition, supercooled liquids, liquid crystals, polymer liquids), computer simulation of liquids ( molecular dynamics simulation ).

In 2005 he received the American Chemical Society Award in Theoretical Chemistry , in 1988 the Joel Henry Hildebrand Award and in 2006 the Joseph O. Hirschfelder Prize .

In 1981/82 he was visiting professor at Columbia University . From 1972 to 1974 he was a Sloan Research Fellow and from 1976 to 1977 Guggenheim Fellow.

He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences (1992) and the American Association for the Advancement of Science .
