Hans David Elkan

Hans David Elkan (born March 22, 1900 in Hohenems , Austria ; † July 23, 1944 in Theresienstadt concentration camp ) was an Austrian teacher and philosopher .

Hans Elkan was born in 1900 as the son of the last head of the Israelite religious community, Theodor Elkan . He studied philosophy at the University of Freiburg and graduated with a dissertation on Plato . In 1934 Elkan was granted the Austrian license to teach at the University of Innsbruck . From 1935 to 1937 he taught history, geography and introductory philosophy at the Bundesgymnasium Dornbirn .

After the National Socialists came to power , Elkan was forbidden to continue teaching.

In 1939, together with his father, he tried in vain to bring the Torah scrolls from the Hohenems synagogue to St. Gallen in Switzerland . In May 1940 the Elkan family was forced by the National Socialists to leave Hohenems and move to Vienna . After their deportation to the Theresienstadt concentration camp in 1942, the Elkan family was put to death there in 1944.
