Hans Erwin Kehrer (born 1917 ; died April 12, 2002 in Münster ) was a German child and youth psychiatrist and autism researcher.

Life

From 1966 to 1985, Hans Erwin Kehrer was head of child and adolescent psychiatry at the Münster University Clinic and professor at the Westphalian Wilhelms University of Münster. After the end of the Second World War he was dean of the medical faculty for one year .

His research and practice focus was early childhood autism . At a time when this disorder was still little known, Kehrer created a point of contact for parents of autistic children at the child and adolescent psychiatry department of the University of Münster and played a key role in better differential diagnostics being able to meet the needs of both children and parents more appropriately . He was particularly interested in the practical problems of the families concerned and the participation of children in social life.

In 1983, Kehrer founded the Institute for Autism Research , in which he also worked after his retirement . He collaborated with researchers from England and the USA and was one of the first in Germany to try out behavioral methods for treating the behavioral disorders associated with autism . Among other things, he developed a language program for autistic children to facilitate communication with them and enable them to participate in school education. Using video-based analysis, he researched the social interaction between autistic toddlers and their mothers.

In 1991, together with Barbara Classen and Hans-Joachim Peter, he presented an international bibliography on autism.
