Gerhardt Nissen

Gerhardt Nissen (born September 21, 1923 in Tondern ; † July 19, 2014 ) was a German psychiatrist and director of the clinic for child and adolescent psychiatry and psychotherapy at the Julius Maximilians University of Würzburg . He was one of the first representatives of his subject in Germany and, together with Hubert Harbauer, Reinhart Lempp and Peter Strunk, was the author of the German textbook in his field, which has been leading for decades (1st edition 1971, 7th edition 1994).

Live and act

Born in Denmark in 1923, Nissen was naturalized in Germany in 1930. He studied medicine in Vienna and Kiel from 1944 to 1950 . In Kiel he also completed a second degree in philosophy and psychology . After doctorate and license to practice medicine, he worked from 1950 to 1953 as a scientific assistant at the Pathological Institute of Kiel University and at pediatric and internal clinics. From 1953 to 1963 he worked in the Bremische Landesnervenklinik as a ward doctor in the “child observation ward ” and neurological and psychiatric wards. In 1958 Nissen was promoted to senior physician . In 1961 he took over the management of the department for child and adolescent psychiatry.

From 1963 to 1978 Nissen was director of the clinic for child and adolescent psychiatry in West Berlin . At the same time he was medical director of the Humboldt Hospital in Berlin-West with 15 specialist clinics from 1974 to 1978 . In 1971 he received his habilitation and in 1973 he was appointed adjunct professor at the Free University . He also worked as a lecturer at the University of Education in Berlin . In 1976, he did not accept an offer to a chair at the University of Essen . In 1978 he accepted a chair at the University of Würzburg, the first of this discipline in the Free State of Bavaria . He held his inaugural lecture in Würzburg on July 18, 1979 on the subject of biological and social aspects of child development and upbringing . In 1990 Nissen was appointed "State Doctor for Mentally and Emotionally Disabled Children and Adolescents". In 1991 Nissen retired.

Nissen's scientific focus was on depression in childhood and adolescence, to which he dedicated the world's first monograph in 1971. He was a member of numerous scientific societies at home and abroad.
