The Tōkai University ( Japanese 東海 大学 Tōkai Daigaku ) is a private university founded in 1942 with headquarters in Tokyo and campuses in the prefectures of Kanagawa , Shizuoka , Hokkaidō and Kumamoto . It is best known for its law faculty .
history
In December 1942, the Aeronautical College ( 航空 科学 専 門 学校 , Kōkū kagaku semmon gakkō ) was founded in Shimizu , Shizuoka Prefecture. The founder was Matsumae Shigeyoshi ( 松 前 重 義 , 1901-1991), a senior technician at the Japanese Ministry of Communications ( 逓 信 省 , Teishin-shō ). He had already founded a private school Bōsei-Gakujuku ( 望 星 学 塾 , German "Bōsei Academy"; Bōsei means "look up to the stars") in 1936 , based on the model of the Danish folkehøjskole . One of the four mottos of the private school was: “In your youth, bind your hope to the stars.” The Gakujuku was closed in the Pacific War , but the university inherited these mottos from her.
Matsumae then founded the Radiotechnische Fachschule ( 電波 科学 専 門 学校 , Dempa kagaku semmon gakkō in Tokyo) in March 1944 . In August 1945 after the Pacific War, the technical schools were merged to form the Tōkai Natural Science School ( 東海 科学 専 門 学校 , Tōkai kagaku semmon gakkō ). They developed into Tōkai University in May 1946, which was incorporated into the new Japanese education system in 1950. At first it only had two faculties (humanities and engineering), because Matsumae sought mutual understanding between the two spaces.
It was not until the 1960s that the Shōnan campus opened in Hiratsuka , Kanagawa Prefecture (the headquarters remained in Tokyo). In April 2008, the Kyushu Tōkai University (in Kumamoto ) and the Hokkaidō Tōkai University (in Asahikawa ) were merged with the Tōkai University.
The university operates four kindergartens, one elementary school, seven middle schools and 14 high schools.
