Hans Günther Karl von Hammerstein (* December 17, 1730 ; † December 1, 1795 ) was a lieutenant general and chief of the 2nd cavalry regiment (cuirassiers) in the Elector of Brunswick-Lüneburg . He comes from the line of Loxten.

Life

origin

His parents were Friedrich Christoph von Hammerstein (* May 31, 1679; † November 25, 1740) and his wife Bertha Sophia von der Schulenburg (* May 30, 1709; † April 22, 1785) from the Altenhausen family. General Rudolf von Hammerstein was his brother.

Military career

He joined the Hammerstein regiment on January 28, 1746 as Cornet , in which his uncle Christian Ludwig von Hammerstein (founder of the line in Castorf) was chief. There he became a lieutenant, on May 13, 1749 Rittmeister. The regiment entered the Seven Years' War in 1756 . On April 24, 1757, the Hammerstein Regiment and the Rittmeister distinguished themselves in the Battle of Bergen and even more so in the Battle of Minden , where he suffered a severe head wound. In Minden the regiment with the Holstein Dragoons was on the left flank of the army near the Wangenheim corps, which stood opposite the Corps de Broglie on the left flank of the army . These two cavalry regiments, united with their infantry and artillery, broke through both French lines and drove them to flight. When the rushing cavalry de Broglies attacked the exhausted troops, they not only struck out of the field, but also captured an infantry brigade of this corps, captured two flags and ten artillery pieces and thus contributed significantly to the victory in the battle. The Duke Ferdinand of Braunschweig therefore showed a particular satisfaction with her behavior. The Rittmeister von Hammerstein earned a promotion that day. He was transferred to the Jüngermann Regiment on June 3, 1760 as a major and to the Alt-Bremer Regiment as a lieutenant colonel on January 24, 1772. He became a colonel on December 7, 1777 and was given the Celle cavalry regiment in 1781 (from 1783 No. 2). On March 31, 1787 he was promoted to major general, in 1793 he surrendered his regiment to Prince Ernst August , who would later become king, and on August 3, 1795, he became lieutenant general. He died shortly afterwards on December 1, 1795
