Hans Günther Mattern

Hans Günther Mattern (born March 28, 1958 in Bonn ) is a German diplomat . Since September 2019 he has been the German consul general in the Russian city ​​of Kaliningrad , the former Königsberg .

Life

After graduating from high school in Bonn in 1976 and completing basic military service, he studied law in Bonn, Geneva and Freiburg im Breisgau. In 1986 he passed the second state examination in law in Stuttgart. In 1987 and 1988 he worked as a freelancer for a law firm in Mexico City.

In 1989 he entered the foreign service. After a preparatory service at the Foreign Office , he became a consultant for international personnel policy there in 1990. From 1991 to 1993 he was a consultant for economic cooperation at the German embassy in Bogotá . From 1993 to 1997 he again worked at the Foreign Office as a personnel officer. From 1997 to 2000 he was a press and political advisor at the German embassy in Mexico City.

From 2000 to 2003 he was the German ambassador to Turkmenistan . From 2003 to 2005 he advised the Federal Minister of the Interior Otto Schily . From 2006 to 2007 he headed the branch office of the German embassy in Afghanistan in Faizabad and also the civilian part of the Provincial Reconstruction Team there . From 2007 to 2010 he was permanent representative at the German embassy in Mexico City. From 2010 to 2013 he headed the Department for Visa Law and Policy at the Federal Foreign Office. From 2013 to 2016 he was permanent representative at the German embassy in Bern. From 2016 to 2018 he was the German ambassador to Montenegro .

After attending a Russian language course at the Foreign Office, he became Consul General in Kaliningrad in 2019 .
