Hans Geiger (chess player)

Johannes ( Hans ) Geiger (born January 1, 1899 in Angedair , Tyrol , † June 29, 1972 in Innsbruck ) was an Austrian chess official and head of the Austrian Chess Federation , who joined the Greater German Chess Federation in 1938 .

Life

Hans Geiger learned to play chess at the age of 12 in the prince-bishop's boys' seminar in Brixen from a nurse who was not entirely familiar with the rules. It was not until five years later that his classmate Franz Wohlgemuth , the son of a member of the Innsbruck chess club , taught him the rules correctly. A simultaneous performance by Rudolf Spielmann on March 27, 1917 in Innsbruck motivated him to join the Innsbruck chess club. Walter Flir became his first teacher there. Geiger learned quickly. As Kaiserjäger in Beneschau , he met the strong former Prague player Boguschovsky , whom he was soon superior. After success in the club, he defeated u. a. his teacher and the master of the Bavarian Chess Federation Max Kapferer , he played his first foreign tournament in Regensburg in 1921 - he finished fifth. Further tournaments in Innsbruck in 1922 and Vienna in 1926 followed. At this point he was already a member of the German Chess Club Vienna . In 1928 Geiger won the Alpine Championship in Graz . In 1929 he took a creative break and devoted himself to various functions in the association.
