Reiner Wirsching (born January 18, 1963 in Stammheim am Main ) is a former German soccer player . Today he is a doctor in Schweinfurt and Bergtheim .

Player career

Shooting star in the Bundesliga

Reiner Wirsching made his debut in paid football late. Until 1988 he played for his home club, SV Stammheim, in the then sixth class district league. For the 1988/89 season, the medical student moved to the third-class Bayern league for 1. FC Schweinfurt 05 . Due to very good performances, 1. FC Nürnberg became aware of Wirsching. Since attacker Dieter Eckstein moved to Eintracht Frankfurt during the preliminary round of the 1988/89 season in Nuremberg , the club was looking for reinforcements on the offensive. During the winter break, the Nuremberg team signed the “highly talented player” under coach Hermann Gerland , Wirsching immediately had a good debut. Gerland put him in the first team at the start of the second half. In the game against FC St. Pauli , Wirsching scored the 2: 2 and 5: 3 results. The 1.81-meter-tall attacker then stayed in the first team and was in the starting line-up in every second round match. He scored a total of six goals, including the 1-0 on the penultimate matchday against FC Bayern Munich . With the 2-1 victory, the club secured relegation.

Wirsching went into his first full Bundesliga season as a regular player. He acted from midfield this season , while Christian Hausmann and Frank Türr fought for second place in attack alongside Souleyman Sané . Wirsching was in the starting line-up in all 29 outings this season. By the 13th matchday he had scored six goals, the first of which he scored the 1-0 winning goal in the away game against FC St. Pauli. After the 31st matchday he scored his seventh and last goal of the season against VfL Bochum in a 2-1 win. In that game he was injured and missed the last three games of the season.

For the 1990/91 season , Arie Haan, a new coach came to the club. He planned to build a team around the axis Andreas Köpke in goal, Vlado Kasalo as libero, Uwe Weidemann in midfield and Reiner Wirsching in attack, which should reach at least a single-digit place in the table. But the club fought to stay in the league all season, and things weren't as good for Wirsching either. He met once in 26 missions. From the 16th to the 22nd matchday he was also absent due to injury. Dieter Eckstein , for whom Wirsching was once brought to Nuremberg, was brought back from Nuremberg and shot the club to victory over SG Wattenscheid 09 in the first game of the second half of the season .

During the 1991/92 season in the Nuremberg jersey, Christian Wück , a striker from Schweinfurt, caused a stir. Wirsching was no longer in the squad due to injury, after 72 Bundesliga games and 14 goals. During the season he returned to FC Schweinfurt 05, who played in the Bayern League again.

Soccer and medicine

After two years in the Bayern League, the Schweinfurters missed qualification for the new Regionalliga Süd in 1994 . Wirsching, who had meanwhile pursued his medical studies and was about to get his doctorate , switched to the regional league team TSV Vestenbergsgreuth . There he experienced the finest hour in the club's history when TSV defeated Bayern Munich 1-0 in the first round of the 1994/95 season in the DFB Cup .

For the 1995/96 season, Wirsching was no longer part of the Vestenbergsgreuther squad.

Wirsching then did his doctorate (1996) at the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg as a doctor of medicine. He presented his work in sports medicine with “Results after surgical treatment of the fresh fibular ligament rupture of the upper ankle” .

For the 2001/02 season, Reiner Wirsching took over the position of team manager at Würzburger FV in the Bavarian League. Together with coach Jochen Seuling, he was responsible for the young team. After a successful start with six games without defeat, the Würzburg team played in the upper half of the table. The DFB-Pokal game against TSV 1860 Munich in the first main round 2001/02 attracted 10,000 spectators, the team of the coaching duo Wirsching / Seuling lost 0:10.

In March 2002, Seuling and Wirsching resigned together, and their successor could not prevent the Würzburg from being relegated to the Landesliga Nord . On September 13, 2009, Wirsching won the DFB-Ü40-Cup as a player with TSV Bergrheinfeld, which can be viewed as the unofficial German championship for players over 40 years of age.

Reiner Wirsching works today in Schweinfurt as a surgeon , sports medicine specialist and orthopedist with his own practice. As a team doctor, he also looks after 1. FC Schweinfurt 05 and the ice hockey players of the upper division ERV Schweinfurt . Wirsching lives in Volkach today .
