Vladimir "Vlado" Kasalo (born November 11, 1962 in Lenđerovina ) is a former Yugoslav and Croatian football player on the position of defender .

life and career

Kasalo probably began his career at NK Osijek , where he was also employed in the professional field from 1983, before moving to Dinamo Zagreb in 1987 . From there, the Yugoslav national player came in 1989 with the recommendation of two games for a world selection for a million DM transfer to 1. FC Nürnberg . Announced by President Gerd Schmelzer as a “very big fish”, he only made five appearances in his first year in the Bundesliga due to an injury and missed the 1990 World Cup . Already stamped as a wrong purchase, he nevertheless earned a regular place on the defensive next to Ulf Metschies and Jörg Dittwar in the following season . While the team had moved away from the relegation ranks in the relegation battle through several games without conceding a goal after the winter break, in the game against VfB Stuttgart on March 16, 1991, he defeated Andreas Köpke with an own goal to the 0-1 defeat. When he had contributed to the 2-0 defeat by means of an own goal against Karlsruher SC on March 23, 1991, the police investigated him for betting fraud and finally arrested him. After it became known that he had visited various Nuremberg casinos several times, 1. FC Nürnberg put the player on leave after 22 Bundesliga games in which he had scored a goal, and the DFB withdrew his gaming license. He was sentenced to jail for driving without a license and for illegal gambling; Whether he had actually scored his own goals on purpose to bring about the two defeats and thus gain profits on the black betting market could not be clarified.

Kasalo returned to Croatia after serving his sentence and fought in the Croatian War in the defense of Zagreb. In the summer of 1992, his compatriot Josip Kuže brought him back to Germany as a football player. Until March 1994 he was still active for the second division club 1. FSV Mainz 05 . In 55 second division games, he ran alongside Steffen Herzberger , Michael Müller , Jürgen Klopp and Michael Schuhmacher and scored five goals. Then he returned to Zagreb. There he worked as a trainer and scout in 2015.

Kasalo was arrested several times after his career in Croatia for illegally possessing weapons and drugs.
