Gerhard "Gerd" Schmelzer (born June 3, 1951 in Ketteldorf , Middle Franconia ) is a German entrepreneur and former sports official.

Career

Schmelzer grew up in Ketteldorf, a district of Heilsbronn . He completed an apprenticeship as a banker and studied business administration at the university of applied sciences. In the 1970s, he and his partner Gunnar Haberstroh ran the AUTO LEY company, brand Citroën , before buying, refurbishing and reselling a former cucumber factory in Nuremberg in the 1980s. Part of the property, the so-called rock cellar, is now a tourist attraction.

In 1978 Schmelzer founded the "Alpha Group" and specialized in the revitalization of fallow land and problem properties, mainly in Nuremberg. Schmelzer realized his biggest project there in the early 1990s, when he acquired the 80,000 square meter TA area after the bankruptcy of the typewriter manufacturer Triumph Adler (TA) and restructured it into a center for medium-sized companies for around 180 million D-Marks. Later he also bought the former Tilly barracks in Nuremberg- Schweinau and the grounds of the Sebald printing works in the city center. A new district was created on both areas with extensive residential and commercial development. In addition, the Alpha Group acquired parts of the former Quelle administration on Fürther Straße and the two 80-meter-high former office towers of the electronics manufacturer Grundig in the Langwasser district . The 16-hectare former Grundig factory site is also to be transformed into a company center. The original hotel project for the two office towers was dropped; instead, there was temporary accommodation for civil war refugees.

A project that was followed particularly closely by the public in 2007 was the purchase of the Augustinerhof in the immediate vicinity of the main market . The site had been fallow since the mid-1990s after a controversial referendum and was considered the largest inner-city eyesore in Nuremberg . The Alpha Group was finally awarded the contract as part of a foreclosure auction. Shops, offices and a hotel are to be built there on 15,000 square meters of usable space by the beginning of 2020. In 2017, the Free State of Bavaria announced that it would set up a branch of the Deutsches Museum in Augustinerhof for 27.6 million euros .

Sports

At the end of the 1970s, Schmelzer also entered the field of professional sports management and worked for the then second-class handball club TuSpo Nuremberg . Under Schelmer's leadership, TuSpo Nürnberg achieved the only promotion to the handball league to date in 1981 . Two years later Schmelzer resigned from his position at TuSpo Nürnberg to succeed Michael A. Roth as the new president of the Bundesliga soccer club 1. FC Nürnberg . At the 1983 annual general meeting, Schmelzer was elected the youngest ever President of a German Bundesliga club at the age of 32. During his tenure, the FCN managed to establish itself permanently in the Bundesliga after promotion in 1985 . 1988 also succeeded in qualifying for the Uefa Cup . In addition, Schmelzer initiated the “Club 2000” project right at the start of his term of office. Under this motto, what was then the Nuremberg Municipal Stadium was modernized and the club grounds at the Valznerweiher were renovated. In 1992 Schmelzer unexpectedly gave up his office.
