The Lebkuchen-Schmidt GmbH & Co KG is a German company based in Nuremberg . The company's main line of business is the manufacture and sale of gingerbread , biscuits and other confectionery .

The Nuremberg company is registered as a limited partnership . General partners are a foundation set up by Henriette Schmidt-Burkhardt and E. Otto Schmidt Lebkuchen Verwaltungs GmbH . Around 250 employees work all year round, plus around 800 to 1000 seasonal employees . The Board was responsible until her death in 2014 Henriette Schmidt-Burkhardt as managing general partner. Since the death of Henriette Schmidt-Burkhardt in 2014, the Nuremberg entrepreneur Gerd Schmelzer has been the managing director of Lebkuchen-Schmidt. The company was founded in 1926; E. Otto Schmidt took over a position of gingerbread from the bankruptcy of a defaulting business partner from his brother, a businessman. E. Otto Schmidt decided to sell the goods by mail order . As early as the early 1930s, the company had over 200 employees and had its own production facility. The current factory premises have been owned by the company since 1955. After the death of the company founder, his sons Rudolf and Martin inherited the company. After both deaths in 1980 and 1983, Rudolf's wife Henriette Schmidt-Burkhardt , who actually studied education, took over the business. In 1988 Lebkuchen-Schmidt took over the traditional company Wicklein , the oldest gingerbread bakery in Nuremberg; Wicklein gingerbread is the only product available from general retailers. Today Lebkuchen-Schmidt is the largest gingerbread mail order company in the world. Schmidt-Burkhardt died in Nuremberg in February 2014.

Lebkuchen-Schmidt is involved as a sponsor in the fields of sport, science and culture. The Nürnberger Klassik Open Air, for example, goes back to an initiative by Henriette Schmidt-Burkhardt.

With the exception of Wicklein gingerbread, the company's products are not commercially available. In addition to the mail order business, Lebkuchen-Schmidt also sells its products through its own shops . In the main season for the Christmas biscuits business from the beginning of October to Christmas, over a hundred seasonal branches are open in Germany, some of them also in the off-season until the end of January. Nuremberg with four and Munich with ten branches are particularly well represented . Mainly retail spaces are used that serve as ice cream parlors in summer ; the sales staff provide seasonal workers. Six other shops are open all year round, three of them are in Nuremberg.
