Hans Griepentrog (painter)
Hans A. Griepentrog (born December 12, 1910 in Trier ; † November 8, 1984 in Münster ) was a German painter and draftsman .
Life
Hans A. Griepentrog, born in Trier in 1910, grew up in East Prussia . After graduating from high school, he did an apprenticeship in handicrafts and then took up studies at the art academies in Königsberg ( Alfred Particle ), Dresden ( Wilhelm Rudolph ) and Berlin ( Willy Jaeckel ). He studied history at the University of Berlin . He became a soldier in 1941 and was taken prisoner by the Soviets after the war. In 1945 he settled as a freelance artist in the Halle district, where he had spent several years during the war. In 1953 he became a lecturer at the Guild School of Painting in Bielefeld. In 1957 he went to Münster, where he was given a teaching position as head of the studio for free and applied painting at the Werkkunstschule Münster. In 1973 he became a professor in the design department of the Münster University of Applied Sciences . In 1984 Hans A. Griepentrog died in Münster.

Hans Griepentrog created landscapes and cityscapes in watercolors and oil paintings in Weißenfels and Saxony during the war years . Architecture studies are part of the work, even later, especially in the early 1970s. His work is characterized by a special feeling for space and composition and is part of the technical basis that Griepentrog passed on to his students. Landscapes of later years were not created in front of a motif, but work with impressions of nature from the vastness of the landscape that Griepentrog had experienced in his childhood in East Prussia.
Drawings from the 1970s and 1980s record observations and situations in cafés and in the cityscape of Münster. In a masterful drawing style, India ink drawings were created (partly supplemented with chalk or watercolor) which, in an inimitable reduction of the graphic means used, put very precise café visitors, their attitudes, and the mood of café scenes into the picture. Griepentrog was a frequent guest in the traditional Café Schucan in Münster.
Works by Hans A. Griepentrog are found in the Münster City Museum and Neu-Augustusburg Castle in Weißenfels as bequests.
