Hans Griepentrog created landscapes and cityscapes in watercolors and oil paintings in Weißenfels and Saxony during the war years . Architecture studies are part of the work, even later, especially in the early 1970s. His work is characterized by a special feeling for space and composition and is part of the technical basis that Griepentrog passed on to his students. Landscapes of later years were not created in front of a motif, but work with impressions of nature from the vastness of the landscape that Griepentrog had experienced in his childhood in East Prussia.

Drawings from the 1970s and 1980s record observations and situations in cafés and in the cityscape of Münster. In a masterful drawing style, India ink drawings were created (partly supplemented with chalk or watercolor) which, in an inimitable reduction of the graphic means used, put very precise café visitors, their attitudes, and the mood of café scenes into the picture. Griepentrog was a frequent guest in the traditional Café Schucan in Münster.

Works by Hans A. Griepentrog are found in the Münster City Museum and Neu-Augustusburg Castle in Weißenfels as bequests.
