Hans Hartz (born July 4, 1902 in Kiel , † March 1, 1971 in Hamburg ) was a German photographer .

Life

Hartz first learned electrical engineering and from 1924 to 1926 he graduated from the higher ship and mechanical engineering school in Kiel with a degree in engineering . However, he did not practice the profession, but founded the “Bromographische Anstalt Tams & Hartz” in Kiel in 1926 with Max Tams.

In 1927 he married his wife Frieda and moved with her to Hamburg in 1928. In the same year he opened a picture publisher and card sales company with the publisher Hans Andres. In 1929 his wife gave birth to twins Inge and Ursel. For some time he worked as an on-board photographer on passenger ships, choosing not only the sights of the travel destinations but also life on board as a motif. He later specialized in cityscapes and landscape shots, which he mainly sold to travelers as postcards, which earned him the nickname "Mister Postcard".

He photographed on 13 × 18 cm plates , the cards were printed using the bromide silver printing process.

The focus of his activity was his hometown Hamburg, but he also traveled to the rest of Germany, taking up tourist motifs in the seasonal change.

In 1956 he founded a Color-Dia-Verlag in Hamburg and was active as a publisher until 1968. After his death in 1971, his wife and daughter Ursel continued to run the company until it was dissolved in 1994.

The photo archive went to the State Photo Agency in Hamburg, part of which was sold to the German Historical Museum . The Kiel City Archives also have photographs by Hans Hartz
