Hans Hergot
Hans Hergot , also Johannes Herrgott (* possibly in Nuremberg ; † May 20, 1527 in Leipzig ) was a printer and bookkeeper from Nuremberg.
Life
In his workshop were u. a. Printed music, texts by Reformation authors, the German translation of the New Testament by Martin Luther and also Thomas Müntzer's “Expressed Exposure” . In 1525, Luther brought a lawsuit against “the little Herrgöttle” at the Nuremberg Council because of the unauthorized reprint of his writings.
Hergot is considered to be the author of the socially utopian scripture influenced by Müntzer, the ideas of Sebastian Franck and the Anabaptist movement , “From the new change in Christian life” , which appeared anonymously in 1527. In this scripture a universal Christian fellowship is outlined:
- "And the people will all be learned, ynn mean, eyn ytzlicher where to he is sent and what he can, and all things will come ynn to mean, so that keyner will have it better than the other."
After the Leipzig student Martin Mentzer and a Johann von Liegnitz were arrested for copying and distributing the script, Hergot was probably arrested in Zwickau as well . He was from Hofgericht Duke George the Bearded sentenced to death and on 20 May 1527, the Leipzig Market Square executed . There is a copy of the writing in the city archives with the note that this is "Hans Hergots von Nurmberg ufrurisch buchlein, for what sake he judged the swords alhir." His widow Kunegunde Hergot continued the printing shop in Nuremberg until 1538.
Hans Hergot Tower
In Uelzen, an earlier water tower is named after Hans Hergot. In the Hans-Hergot-Turm , a meeting of hand press printers, the "Typomania", has taken place once a year since 1987 under the direction of Willy Drucker.
