Hans-Jürgen Kleinsteuber (born June 5, 1943 in Lemgo ; † February 18, 2012 in Hamburg ) was a German political and media scientist .

Hans J. Kleinsteuber studied Political Science from 1962 to 1967 at the Otto Suhr Institute of the Free University of Berlin and from 1967 to 1968 the subjects Political Science, Economics and Diplomacy at the Universities of Tufts and Harvard . From 1969 to 1975 he was a research assistant at the John F. Kennedy Institute for North American Studies at the Free University of Berlin. In 1975 he received his doctorate at the Free University of Berlin with a thesis on State Intervention and Transport Policy in the USA . A year later he became a professor at the Institute for Political Science (sub-area comparative government theory ) at the University of Hamburg . Since the Institute for Journalism was founded in 1982, he has worked there in the journalism sub-course and since 1989 has also been a professor at the Institute for Journalism. Kleinsteuerber retired in 2008. His main research interests were media and politics as well as media systems in Germany and in international comparison (North America, Europe), media economics, media technology, regulation, radio and international reporting.

In 1988 Kleinsteuber founded the Media and Politics department, of which he became head. In addition, Kleinsteuerber was from 1996 to 1998 as an expert in the Enquete Commission of the German Bundestag "Future of the media in business and society - Germany's way into the information society", from 1999 to 2007 member of the Broadcasting Council of Deutsche Welle and since 2002 in the information and specialist committee Communication of the German UNESCO Commission .
