Barbara Thomass

Barbara Thomaß (born January 12, 1957 in Bremen ) is a German communications and media scientist and university professor.

Life

Barbara Thomaß studied journalism, political science and economics at the Free University of Berlin from 1976 to 1983 . Her master's thesis dealt with cultural policy with mass media in a developing country using the example of Algeria . She then completed an editorial traineeship at Lübecker Nachrichten from 1983 to 1985 . Until 1991 she worked as a journalist and science editor for print media as well as a lecturer in rhetoric and communication.

From 1991 to 1993 she was a research assistant at the University of Hamburg at the Media and Politics department at the University of Hamburg, headed by Hans J. Kleinsteuber . With the thesis on Journalistic Ethics. A comparison of the discourses in professional socialization in France, Great Britain and Germany , she received her doctorate in 1998. At the Institute for Journalism at the University of Hamburg, she completed a master's degree in Journalism and Communication Studies in 1999/2000.

She has worked as a lecturer and lecturer at the University of Hamburg, the University of Bremen , the University of Lüneburg , the Georg-August University of Göttingen and the University of Paris III . From 2000 to 2003 she was a habilitation fellow from the DFG . During this time she took on a visiting professorship at the University of Vienna and a substitute professorship at the Ruhr University in Bochum . There she has been a professor at the Institute for Media Studies since 2003. Her specialty is media systems in an international comparison.

In 2007, Barbara Thomaß became a board member of the Academy for Journalism in Hamburg, and has been chairman of the board since 2009. From January 15, 2008 she sat as a representative of ver.di in the ZDF television council in the committee for finance, investments and technology . In 2011 she was elected to the ZDF Board of Directors, to which she has been a member since July 1, 2012. This ended her membership in the television council. She has been the second deputy chairwoman of the ZDF board of directors since July 1, 2017. She is also a member of the German Society for Media and Communication Studies and the Media Ethics Network.
