Hans Jacobs (aviation pioneer)

Hans Jacobs (born April 30, 1907 in Hamburg , † October 24, 1994 in Siegen ) was a German sailplane designer and aviation pioneer. As head of the German Research Institute for Glider Flight (DFS for short) in Griesheim , he was responsible for the design and construction of a number of well-known glider types, including DFS Habicht , DFS Kranich , DFS Weihe and DFS 230 in the years before World War II .

Life

The son of a captain completed an apprenticeship as a shipbuilder, then studied at the higher technical college in Hamburg and graduated as a shipbuilding engineer. In 1927 he became a member of the Rhön-Rossitten-Gesellschaft (RRG), where his first in-house design was created in 1930. In 1931, together with Herbert Lück, he wrote the book Werkstatt-Praxis for the construction of gliders and gliders for practical glider construction. In 1935 Jacobs moved to DFS , which had emerged from the RRG, and became head of the gliding department. There, among the developed -Rhon soaring competitions and other events successful gliders Rhönadler (1932), Rhoen Buzzard (1933), Rhönsperber (1934), Crane (1935) and Heron (1937), of which several hundred copies were built. In 1936 Jacobs designed the Sparrowhawk Junior for the aviator Hanna Reitsch . Further types of this era are the consecration from 1938 and the sea ​​eagle from 1935, which was tested by Reitsch.

In 1952 Jacobs started his last glider construction, the Kranich III manufactured by Focke-Wulf in Bremen for the first flight.
