Life

Hans Joachim Balcke, son of the engineer Martin Balcke and Agnes Ida Maria Balcke born. Schneider, studied mechanical engineering at the Technical University of Charlottenburg , where he joined the Corps Rheno-Guestphalia . After completing his studies, he first worked in an engineering office in Witten and at the Frankenthal machine and armatures factory in Klein, Schanzlin & Becker . For the technical realization and commercial exploitation of his inventions for boiler feed recovery and energy saving from the exhaust steam from steam power plants, machines and turbines, he founded the Balcke & Co. Company for the construction of condensation plants in Bochum together with the businessman Otto Kleinschmidt . At first he concentrated on the engineering of energy and water recovery of the cold end of steam processes and only supplied the chimney cooler he had invented from his own production.

In 1896 Balcke founded the Bettinger & Balcke pump and compressor factory in Frankenthal , where he manufactured air, condenser and water pumps. In 1905 he merged the Bochum and Frankenthal companies to form Maschinenbau-Aktiengesellschaft Balcke (MAG Balcke). From 1908 he was the first in Germany to manufacture rotating air pumps and steam jet devices for use as vacuum pumps in condensation systems. Furthermore, through his technical inventions and developments, he had a decisive influence on the development of high-pressure steam technology. He headed his company as general director (chairman of the board). In the 1920s the name "Balcke" was synonymous with cooling tower.

Since 1892 Hans Joachim Balcke was married to Anna von Kuczkowska, with whom he had two sons.

Hans Joachim Balcke was buried in the cemetery on Lortzingstrasse in Bad Pyrmont.
