Hans Joachim Malberg
Hans-Joachim Malberg (born June 8, 1896 in Leipzig , † August 1, 1979 ) was a German author of children's and young people's books and editor of the village newspaper published in Hildburghausen (South Thuringia ) .
Life
In his youth, Hans-Joachim Malberg was a member of the folk-influenced youth association Adler und Falken . He studied German, history and art history in Leipzig and Jena. He obtained his doctorate in 1922. phil. He was not drawn to scientific work, however, but was active in art and literature. After completing his doctorate, he worked as an educator in child welfare for a short time. This work is obviously the root of his later commitment to children's and youth literature. From 1924 to 1933 he was the culture editor of various Thuringian newspapers and, in addition to his journalistic work, had started writing radio plays such as “Boards that mean the world”, which was first broadcast in 1931. Resident in Weimar since 1928, he and Emil Herfurth were a staunch supporter of National Socialism. In 1932 Malberg published a Goethe chronicle with “His Earth Days Trace”. After the Nazis came to power , he became a freelance writer. In Alfred Rosenberg's Kampfbund for German Culture , he headed the local "Fachschaft Literatur" and in the Reich Association of German Writers , founded in 1933 , he was Gauleiter for Thuringia. During this time, the fairy tale game "Knurks hat ein Herz" was created, which was later published in eleven editions by Gebr. Knabe Verlag Weimar in the series "Knabes Jugendbücherei". From 1934 to 1937 Malberg was chairman (local association chairman) of the Nazi cultural community in Weimar and joined the NSDAP in 1937 . When he was over 40, Hans-Joachim Malberg had to take part in the war.
After the new start of Gebr. Knabe Verlag in Weimar in 1949, he became editor-in-chief there in 1950 and carried out this activity until his death on August 1, 1979. He himself appeared in this publishing house as the author of many u. a. also biographical narratives. A book that deserves special mention in this context is “Buna”, the life story of Prof. Fritz Hofmann , the inventor of synthetic rubber .
From 1954 to 1960, Dr. Hans-Joachim Malberg head of the working group of young authors in the Thuringian Writers 'Association and accompanied many young writers on their way to the writing profession and into the writers' association.
meaning
The books he wrote and edited were very popular in the GDR and read with enthusiasm. The inexpensive books with their colored cover designs and pictures by Hans Wiegandt have filled the bookshelves in many children's rooms. The coveted stories were not the only special thing about this series. For many young writers, it was the stepping stone into the world of publishing.
Malberg had a feeling for the reading needs of children in the GDR without sacrificing the literary quality of the books. At least in the Thuringian region, he has made generations of young readers into book lovers beyond childhood.
