Hans Joachim Staude (* 1904 in Port-au-Prince ; † July 23, 1973 in Florence ) was a German painter .

Life

Staude's father, Hans-Carl, came from Halle (Saale) , was a merchant in Haiti and had married the French-German Elsaippenhauer who was born there. In 1909 the mother and her two sons moved back to Hamburg on Körnerstraße. In 1923, when he had already started to paint, Staude stayed with his father in Haiti for a long time and in 1924 he became a pupil of Hugo Ernst Schnegg in Hamburg . In 1925 he made a study trip to Italy with him and left his tour group in Florence. Returning in 1927, he made the acquaintance of the sculptor Ludwig Kasper in Paris . In 1929 he finally settled in Florence, where he was accepted into the social circles around Bernard Berenson and Maja Winteler Einstein . He lived in the Villa Strozzi-Machiavelli on Via delle Campora. Between 1935 and 1938 he was a student of Felice Carena at the Academy of Florence , after which he had his first painting students and his first exhibitions in the Italian cultural metropolises.

In 1942 he was drafted into the German armed forces. After the end of the war he painted and taught again in Florence and now had a few exhibitions in Germany. The Palazzo Pitti acquired five works over the years, the Uffizi one drawing and a self-portrait for their gallery of self-portraits.

He is buried in Florence on the Cimitero Evangelico agli Allori .

Since 1938 he was married to the architect Renate Mönckeberg. The children Jakob and Angela grew up in Italy, Angela became the wife of Tiziano Terzani .
