Life

Hans Joachim Steinmann was the son of Kaspar Steinmann (* unknown; † 1823), a cotton cloth manufacturer and his wife Clara Ehrenzeller. He was the second child and the eldest son of his parents' eight children. His grandfather Hans Joachim Steinmann was the mayor of St. Gallen. His brother was Daniel Steinmann (1779-1839), businessman and Councilor .

Steinmann joined his father's company and later took over its management, thereby making a small fortune. In 1803 the parish council of St. Gallen appointed him a member of the citizens' poor commission. In 1808 he took over the position of his deceased grandfather as administrator of the Brestenamt (administration of the civil hospital in St. Gallen). After the new constitution was introduced in the canton of St. Gallen in 1816, Hans Joachim Steinmann was elected to the cantonal council. At the same time, the previous municipal council became a city council whose president he was elected on May 17, 1816. In this office he was confirmed alternately with a colleague until 1831, ie until the new constitutional reform . In 1830 he was elected to the Constitutional Council of the Canton of St. Gallen.

In 1816 he took over the presidency of the library. In 1817 he was elected to the school council, whose presidium was transferred to him in 1828. In 1829 he joined the Protestant Central and Church Council of the Canton of St. Gallen.
