Hans Josef Schober

Hans Josef Schober (born October 14, 1944 in Holenbrunn , Upper Franconia ) is an Austrian astronomer and university professor .

life and work

Hans Josef Schober studied astronomy at the University of Graz and received his doctorate in 1971 as a Dr. phil. During his studies he worked from 1967 to 1971 as a research assistant at the Institute for Astronomy at the University of Graz, after receiving his doctorate he became a university assistant to Professor Hermann Haupt and, like him, devoted himself to the physical observation and research of minor planets . From May 1974 onwards, Hans Josef Schober worked for a year as a research assistant at the Astronomical Institute of the Ruhr University in Bochum . In 1977 he completed his habilitation in astronomy. He devoted himself to the research of the photoelectric photometry of the minor planets, where he was able to provide a large number of contributions about their light curves and the duration of their rotation. He discovered minor planets with very slow rotation and studied complex light curves.

Schober was largely responsible for the planning and construction control of the Lustbühel observatory . He was thus a leader in the conception of astronomical research in Austria. The Institute for Astronomy at the University of Graz was merged with the Institute for Meteorology and Geophysics in the joint Institute for Geophysics, Astrophysics and Meteorology (IGAM) with a resolution of December 3, 1999 and has been part of the Institute for Physics at the University since April 2004 Graz.

The asteroid (2871) Schober was named after Hans Josef Schober .
