Life

Kößler comes from a family of carpenters that can be traced back to the 16th century. All of Hans Kößler's male ancestors were verifiably independent carpenters in Bavarian Swabia since 1532. Hans Kößler was born in Lauingen as the son of the cabinetmaker and sculptor Kößler Balthasar. From 1903 to 1906 he attended secondary school in Neuburg an der Donau . He completed his apprenticeship as a sculptor and cabinet maker from 1906 in his father's workshop in Babenhausen / Swabia and passed the journeyman's examination in 1911. From 1914 to 1918 he took part in the war. After his father's death in 1915 and his return from the war in 1919, he took over his father's carpentry workshop.

In 1925 he founded the “Free Carpenters Guild” with some colleagues and was elected its head master. From 1934 to 1945 he was head master of the Illertissen carpenters' guild . Eight years later he was re-elected head master of this guild until 1957. From 1939 to 1946 he was a member of the board of the regional association of Bavarian master carpenters and cultural warden of the Bavarian carpentry trade. From 1953 to 1958 he was cultural warden for southern Bavaria and worked as a speaker in the field of "rural housing".

From 1925 to 1928 he was a committee member of the Babenhausen trade association, from then until 1934 he was a trade association board member. From October 1934 until 1946 he was a district master craftsman. In the years from 1942 to 1946 he also worked as a master craftsman for the Neu-Ulm district. From 1948 on he was elected to the district master craftsman again until 1954 in the Illertissen district and was deputy master craftsman until 1958. As head master of the Illertissen carpentry guild, he was awarded the crafts badge with a gold-plated center panel by the Central Association of German Crafts in the same year. Kößler also devoted himself to training young carpenters. He led the carpentry department and gave drawing lessons. He was a member of the general assembly of the Swabian Chamber of Crafts in Augsburg.

His two children Gertrud and Hans emerged from his marriage to Franziska Huber from Babenhausen. His son Hans continued the joinery until 1991. His grandson Johannes Kößler is also in the family tradition, he is a master carpenter and furniture restorer. Since 1999 he has been running a workshop for furniture restoration and trading in antique furniture in Babenhausen / Swabia.
