Hans Laxmand († May 30, 1443 on the archiepiscopal estate in Flyinge near Lund) was a Danish archbishop in Lund .

Life

His year of birth is not known, nor is his family background known. After studying abroad in Germany, he quickly made a career in the Danish church. In 1410 he was first mentioned as a member of the cathedral chapter in Roskilde . Shortly afterwards he became archdeacon in Lund . In 1436 he was appointed Archbishop of Lund. He was a sharp opponent of King Eric of Pomerania . As a nobleman, he endeavored to raise the importance of the Imperial Council at the expense of the king's power. He also became the leader of the opposition to the king in the Imperial Council. Under the influence of the Council of Basel , he strove for greater independence for the Danish church from the king and the pope. His resistance to the king eventually led to King Erich being deposed and Christoffer von Baiern to be the new Danish king, whom he crowned on New Year's Day 1443 in Ribe Cathedral . He gave him the title "Archirex regni Daniae" as a sign that he was king over three kingdoms.

Hans Laxmand was loyal to the Kalmar Union , but insisted on the greatest possible independence of the individual empires, whereby he saw the focus not in the monarch but in the aristocracy. He tried very hard to improve church discipline. Together with the king he issued two ordinances. One dealt with the church tithing, which should in future also be raised in the area of application of the Jyske Lov , which had apparently not been done until then. The other obliged the bishops to supervise the monasteries in their diocese more closely, to monitor compliance with the rules of the order and to visit them more frequently. Church discipline at that time left a lot to be desired. He achieved the confirmation of the privileges of his cathedral chapter and was enfeoffed by the king himself with the Lindholm fief in Skåne . At the height of his work, he died suddenly on May 30, 1443.

After Archbishop Absalon , he was the most important archbishop in Denmark.
