Hans Lenk (geologist)

Hans Lenk (born May 17, 1863 in Munich ; † February 21, 1938 in Aschau im Chiemgau ) was a German geologist and mineralogist and professor at the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg .

Life

Lenk's father was a secret ministerial secretary and Lenk went to high school in Würzburg. From 1882 Lenk studied natural sciences in Würzburg, Leipzig and Gießen and received his doctorate in Würzburg in 1887. In 1890 he completed his habilitation and became a private lecturer and in 1895 an associate professor at the University of Leipzig . In 1895 he became an associate professor at the University of Erlangen and founder of the Geological-Mineralogical Institute there. In 1898 he became a full professor. On April 1, 1899 ( matriculation no. 3122 ) he was elected a member of the Leopoldina . In 1933 he retired. In 1923 he became a Privy Councilor and later a Privy Councilor.

He researched the geology of central Mexico (with publications between 1883 and 1899) and in Erlangen the geology of Franconia.

His doctoral students also include the first woman to receive a doctorate in Erlangen, the American Dixie Lee Bryant in 1904 with a thesis on rocks from Svalbard.
