Eduard Huettinger

Eduard Hüttinger (born January 6, 1926 in Winterthur ; † August 14, 1998 in Zurich ) was a Swiss art historian .

life and work

Hüttinger was born as the son of Pastor Walther Hüttinger and his wife Maria (née Schudel). He studied art history at the University of Zurich and was awarded a doctorate there in 1952 with a dissertation on Jacopo Tintoretto's picture cycles in the Scuola di S. Rocco in Venice . phil. PhD. In 1963 he completed his habilitation with a thesis on the baroque sculptor Francesco Pianta .

From 1955 to 1965 he worked as a curator at the Kunsthaus Zürich . From 1963 to 1966 he was a private lecturer and assistant professor at the University of Zurich, before becoming a full professor at the University of Heidelberg from 1966 to 1969 - as successor to Walter Paatz . In 1969 he returned to Switzerland, where he took over the chair for modern art history at the University of Bern as the successor to Hans Robert Hahnloser and was head of the art history seminar. In 1991 Hüttinger retired.

Hüttinger held numerous honorary positions. From 1963 to 1982 was a member of the publications commission of the Swiss Institute for Art Research and there from 1982 to 1992 a member of the foundation committee. From 1970 to 1981 he was a member of the Pro Helvetia Board of Trustees . From 1970 to 1991 he was a member of the Bern Museum Commission.

Hüttinger was the author of numerous works on art from the Renaissance to the present. He placed his emphasis on Italian Renaissance painting, motif and reception research, as well as the historical development and methods of art history. His widow Annette Bühler bequeathed a large part of her husband's library to the Swiss Institute for Art Research in 1999 . Since 2006 it has been accessible to Prof. Eduard Hüttinger as a library . The library is constantly being expanded with the latest literature and has a holdings of 15,600 volumes (as of 2014).
