Portrait of Hans Lipperhey from De vero telescopii inventore (1655)

Hans Lipperhey (also: Jan Lipperhey , Hans Lippershey , Johannes Lipperhey , according to ADB: Hans Lippersheim , Hans Laprey ; * around 1570 in Wesel ; † September 1619 in Middelburg ) was a German - Dutch eyewear maker and the inventor of the Dutch telescope (also Galilei Telescope called), and thus the first telescope.

Life

Lipperhey emigrated to Middelburg in today's province of Zeeland in 1594 and settled there as a glasses maker. At the initiative of Moritz von Nassau , Lipperhey first demonstrated the telescope he had invented on September 10, 1608 in The Hague. On October 2, 1608, he offered the Zeeland Council an instrument for seeing into the distance and was commissioned to make this instrument. The following year, Lipperhey's so-called “telescopes” were sold in Paris . Also to Germany, e.g. B. Augsburg , and the first telescopes reached Italy in 1609. In the same year Galileo Galilei achieved an astronomical breakthrough with a Lipperhey replica.

However, Lipperhey did not receive the patent applied for for his telescope. The reason for this was that in October 1608 he was no longer the only one who understood the art of building telescopes. In addition to Hans Lipperhey, Jacob Metius from Alkmaar and Zacharias Janssen claimed to have invented the telescope.

The dispute over the priority with regard to the invention of the telescope was first presented in a book in 1655. This is entitled De vero telescopii inventore (“About the true inventor of the telescope”) and was written by Pierre Borel. In this book there is also an illustration of Lipperhey.

The lunar crater Lippershey , the asteroid (31338) Lipperhey and the exoplanet Lipperhey are named after him.
