Hans Lorenz Stoltenberg (born May 20, 1888 in Hamburg , † November 18, 1963 in Gießen ) was a German sociologist.

Life

Hans Lorenz Stoltenberg studied philosophy, theology and economics at the Universities of Marburg (with Paul Natorp and Hermann Cohen ), Berlin (with Werner Sombart ) and Kiel (with Ferdinand Tönnies ) and was awarded a doctorate in Marburg in 1913. phil. PhD.

In 1917 he became an assistant at the Commission for War Economics in Berlin, then worked from 1921 to 1924 for the Provisional Reich Economic Council and was scientific secretary at the Assenheim Research Center in 1924/25 . Stoltenberg completed his habilitation in 1925 in Gießen for social psychology and general sociology . He worked there from 1925 to 1931 as a private lecturer and became an adjunct professor in 1934. Because of the closure of the university in Gießen, he taught from 1948 to 1956, first as a lecturer, then as an adjunct professor at the Pedagogical Institute in Weilburg . In 1953 he was retired, but continued to teach, also at the University of Giessen, where he had received a license to teach in the agricultural faculty.

In addition to his work in sociology, Stoltenberg also studied ancient languages such as Etruscan and Minoan in Crete. He made a significant contribution to the interpretation of Etruscan numerals .

Despite pioneering advances, systematic rigor and great diligence in publishing, he never succeeded in being appointed to an important chair in his subject, especially because of his unyielding linguistic (foreign word hostile) originality. A "Germanocentrism" practiced consistently down to the smallest detail was the semantic trademark of Stoltenberg. In his writings he coined terms like: Mitselbandermitselbandermitconsciousness or Consciousness-consciousness . He distinguished between group consciousness theory and conscious group theory .
