Hans Mahlich (born November 1, 1912 as Johannes Mahlich ; † June 5, 1986 ) was a German film production manager at DEFA .

Live and act

Nothing is currently known about Johannes 'Hans' Mahlich's early years. He came to DEFA on October 1, 1950. Initially, Mahlich was employed as the production manager, including in the two Ernst Thälmann films Ernst Thälmann - son of his class and Ernst Thälmann - leader of his class by director Kurt Maetzig .

Active as production manager since 1956, he did his most important work for Maetzig and his colleague Frank Beyer . He was involved in the making of the first DEFA science fiction film The Silent Star as well as in Beyer's love and war film King's Children and his concentration camp drama Naked Amongst Wolves, which has been praised for its realism .

In 1965 Mahlich initiated the DEFA Indian film series popular with GDR audiences with Die Söhne der Große Bärin , a reaction to the overwhelming success of the West German Karl May films, and made the Yugoslav actor Gojko Mitić a star. The following Indian films were first made by Dorothea Hildebrandt, and later by other DEFA production managers.

As early as 1959, Mahlich was appointed head of production of the artistic working group (KAG) 'Red Circle' and in 1964 also served there as its acting director and main dramaturge. In this function, Hans Mahlich was also involved in the censorship processes surrounding DEFA's annual production in 1965/66 as a result of the resolutions of the 11th plenum of the SED Central Committee . There is evidence of his comments on the 'plenary film' of Jürgen Böttcher 's year 45 , which Böttcher's colleague Egon Günther had massively attacked for allegedly 'anti-socialist' passages. Also born 45 came, like many other 'plenary movies', after the decline of the SED dictatorship in the cinemas and was first performed eight days after the reunion, on October 11, 1990th

Mahlich's last work as production manager was two DFF productions that were broadcast in 1984. On September 1, 1984, Mahlich left the GDR state company and retired. His last address was in Kleinmachnow .
