action

Katrin Lot works in Berlin as a physical trainer, has two children and is a lieutenant commander of the GDR - Volksmarine married. Richard Lot comes home every few weeks, is the loving father and is adored by his sons. But Katrin is not satisfied with the situation because there is no love between the two.

While Richard is on vacation again and both are spending the day at the zoo with the children, Katrin wants to talk to her husband in the evening and asks him directly why he doesn't want to get a divorce. But for Richard this is not an issue, because a lack of affection and habit in marriage are not grounds for divorce for him. He is reminded by his wife that they once married not out of love, but because they had a child that neither of them wanted. In response to Katrin's objection that a marriage that consists of hypocrisy is not a good marriage, he asks what he should say to his comrades in the People's Navy and his political officer Max Braun in the event of a divorce. It goes on like this until he suddenly says that he is going back to his office immediately, puts some more money on the cupboard and disappears. The very next day he is back home and explains to his wife that he has called in sick in his unit . But she doesn't want to go back to normal daily routine. She tells him that she knows his relationships with other women, presents a letter she found in his belongings as evidence and asks him to release it and apply for a divorce, but Richard defends himself by pointing out that two children, continue.

Katrin Lot tries to get an appointment with the divorce judge Teichmann and gets the answer that a lack of love is not a reason for divorce. When she then says that her husband is an officer in the People's Navy, he only gives her the urgent advice to stay away from a lawsuit. Back home, her husband comes on short vacation and has also brought his friend, the political officer Max, with him. After Richard explained to her that he had told his party group about the divorce problem , the two men try to dissuade Katrin from her thoughts of a separation, as their ideas of love sound very much like gazebo romantic and demand from her a little more sense of duty about the children to show.

In order to get divorced, Katrin develops a plan to commit a shoplifting. After several unsuccessful attempts, in which she is not caught, the day comes when a shop detective observes her. During the subsequent interrogation with the director of the department store, the latter gives her to understand that she should disappear again, which she does not intend to do, because she values a trial. Because of the theft and the conviction, Richard Lot has finally filed for the divorce she was hoping for, as he can no longer be married to such a woman in his profession. Katrin Lot is dismissed from the school service because, as a thief, she is no longer supposed to be up to the tasks expected of her.

During the divorce appointment, Katrin Lot answered the question why she consented to the divorce: I have a criminal record and do not want to stand in the way of my husband's further professional development. She receives unexpected help in establishing custody of the two children from Political Officer Braun. In his testimony, the latter confirms that Ms. Lot is able to cope with this task and that he considers it wrong for Mr. Lot to be awarded the children.

criticism

In New Germany, Horst Knietzsch thinks :

"This film is a plea for reason, for human dignity, topical and far more than a lesson in divorce issues."

The criticism of HU in the Neue Zeit claims:

“The director Egon Günther is sometimes too much in love with optical virtuosity, so that individual scenes - the carnival ball, the gymnastics exercises - become independent. But this dramaturgical weakness is amply compensated for by the realistic conciseness of the dialogues. "

Günter Sobe wrote in the Berliner Zeitung :

“The authors didn't make things easy for themselves. her film contains deep, thought-provoking thoughts about human coexistence within marriage. The dialogues are pointed, as is not often the case in our films, the dialogue director is seated, but the dialogue is stronger than the film production. "

The lexicon of international films writes that the film is a serious examination of the manifestations of GDR society, remarkable in terms of both subject matter and form. It is a problem-conscious film whose above-average design is rounded off by good performance.
