New Year's Eve Punch is a German DEFA entertainment film directed by Günter Reisch in 1960.

action

The sons of the former boxer Wilhelm Lehmann, Michel and Franz, are both brigadiers in a chemical plant . Michel is the head of the sports brigade and puts his passion for sport above everything. He demands this of the members of the brigade as well, and so many family lives suffer from the compulsion of training and constant sporting events. Young Knispel would also much rather spend an evening with Wilhelm's granddaughter Suse. She, in turn, is a member of Franz's brigade, which is dedicated to culture and is busy rehearsing with the band. In a few days, the chemical company's long-prepared New Year's revue will take place, where a figure skating program with band accompaniment is planned. Since the event is to be televised, perfection is required.

Both brigades have to pull together. They drive together to the New Year's Eve winter quarters, where it soon becomes apparent that the sports brigade is also musically and the art brigade is also athletic - but only as long as the two brigade leaders are out of sight. When father Wilhelm wants to familiarize his sons with the preferences of the other son and asks both brigades to ski on the Fichtelberg , but then wants to see and hear a joint cultural program at the mountain hut, Franz refuses and uses the lift with his brigade. At the top, Michel doesn't see why he should dance and prefers to play skat . It comes to a rift again. The two brigades only come together late through two couples: Suse, who is celebrated as a single skater at the successful ice revue, spends the New Year in Knispel's arms. The strict Michel and the sports enthusiast Ruth from Franz's brigade become a couple. And the new year begins with fireworks and New Year's punch .

production

New Year's Eve punch was created as a sequel to the feature film Maibowle , which was released in 1959. Günter Reisch directed both films.

The film about the New Year's Eve celebration in a chemical plant was made at a time when "within the framework of the distribution of tasks within the Comecon [...] the focus of the chemical industry was established in the GDR." The film therefore tried, not least in propaganda, to reinforce this goal.

criticism

The contemporary criticism criticized the fact that the film tries “to be as colorful as possible and to let the prominence of the light muse appear as numerous as possible”, whereby it is not profound. Helmut Niers' film music was also described as not very memorable.

The film dienst described New Year's Eve punch as a film “with a serious background, lots of gossip, some fun, momentum and an ice revue finale. A continuation of the film 'Maibowle'; upright, contemporary conversation without profile. "
