Athletic career

In the 1948/49 season, Meyer played three games in the state class of Saxony with the company sports association (BSG) Pneumatik Aue, the predecessor of the BSG Wismut Aue, at that time one of the five highest divisions in East Germany. Meyer started his career in the league on October 25, 1953, when Wismut Aue played the seventh matchday - BSG activist Brieske-Ost (3: 1) in the position of the left wing runner . From then on he was a regular player until the end of the season, moved to the right side of midfield after the winter break and played a total of 19 point games in 1953/54. He scored his first league goal on November 22, 1953 in the match on the 12th match day Motor Dessau - Wismut Aue, when he scored the 1-1 final score. It was also his only point goal. In the 1954/55 season, in which the soccer section of the BSG Wismut Aue was affiliated to the newly founded SC Wismut Karl-Marx-Stadt, but continued to play their home games in Aue , Meyer lost his status as a regular again. He was only used in eleven league games, in which he played predominantly as a central defender. In the final of the GDR soccer cup on June 19, 1955, which SC Wismut won 3-2 after extra time against SC Empor Rostock , Meyer only played the last 30 minutes. In the transition round to change the football season to the calendar year between August and December 1955, Meyer was not called up in the 13 games. In the 1956 season, which SC Wismut completed as champions, Meyer only played twice. It was not until the 7th match day of the 1957 season that he was fully operational again and played a total of 17 point games in his usual position as a central defender. His team was able to successfully defend the championship title. In 1957, SC Wismut played five games in the European Cup , four of which Meyer played, including the first leg of the first round SC Wismut - Ajax Amsterdam (1: 3). In the 1958 season, the 33-year-old Meyer was eliminated in the GDR league. He played only two point games on the 8th and 9th game day. In his last appearance in the game SC Wismut - Motor Zwickau (2: 2) on May 18, he only played as a substitute. It was his 51st league game within five seasons.

Individual evidence

  1. In various sources the year of birth is mentioned as 1935, which is obviously wrong because of his missions in 1948/49.
