Hans Otto (born September 29, 1922 in Leipzig ; † October 28, 1996 in Freiberg in Saxony ) was a German organist , harpsichordist and cantor .

Life

Hans Otto was a member of the St. Thomas Choir in Leipzig. After graduating from St. Thomas School , he studied with Karl Straube at the Church Music Institute of the Leipzig University of Music from 1945 to 1948 .

After a brief activity at the Emmaus Church in Leipzig , he went to the Heilig-Geist-Kirche in Dresden in 1948 as cantor and organist . In addition to this activity, Hans Otto was a lecturer for artistic organ playing at the church music school there from 1949 to 1968. In 1968 he became church music director and cathedral organist in Freiberg, in 1984 organist at the concert hall in Magdeburg, and in 1992 he officially retired.

Otto was a very versatile church musician, especially the recording of " Bach's organ works on Silbermann organs " made him very well known. In addition to playing the organ, he also worked a lot as a choir conductor . His long-term collaboration with the Dresden Kreuzchor under Rudolf Mauersberger deserves special mention . Hans Otto was the first president of the Gottfried Silbermann Society in Freiberg from 1990 until his death.

In 1980 he was awarded the GDR Art Prize.
