Hans Otto Lenel (born February 18, 1917 in Göttingen ; † December 18, 2016 in Mainz ) was a German economist specializing in competition theory and policy.

Life

Hans Otto Lenel was the son of the qualified lawyer Paul Lenel († 1918 in the First World War ) and the grandson of the important Freiburg legal philosopher of Roman law Otto Lenel (1849-1935). He spent his childhood with his mother and sister in an apartment in Freiburg. After graduating as a business graduate from the University of Cologne in 1940, Hans Otto Lenel received his doctorate in Freiburg in 1942 under Walter Eucken , whose pupil and later research assistant (1945–1947 as an assistant) he was; he belongs to the second generation of the " Freiburg School ". From 1949 until he was appointed full professor of economics at the University of Mainz in 1964, he worked as an independent auditor. Lenel completed his habilitation in 1960 at the University of Bonn . He taught in Mainz until his retirement in 1982. Since it was founded in 1948, Lenel was a member of the editorial team of ORDO , the yearbook for the order of business and society, and from 1973 until his death he was one of the editors of this magazine. His book and essay publications, especially in ORDO, are characterized by always theoretically reflected, but always practical problems of a functioning competitive order, the safeguarding and further development of which in a European and global framework is a central concern of his. For his services to the further development of the social market economy, Lenel received the Golden Decoration of Honor from the Düsseldorf Chamber of Crafts in 2006 .
