Hans Paule

Hans Paule (* 1879 in Vienna , † 1951 in Capri ) was an Austrian painter who lived mainly on Capri.

Life

Hans Paule was a student of the painter and life reformer Karl Wilhelm Diefenbach from 1897 to 1899 in his artist family on the Himmelhof near Vienna. After attending the art academy in Vienna, Paule came to Capri around 1900, where he initially lived in a cave, following a non-bourgeois, natural lifestyle in the sense of his master. After Italy entered the First World War , he was exiled to Sardinia in 1915; In 1924 he returned to Capri, where he was in contact with other artists living on the island, including Otto Sohn-Rethel , Raffaele Castello and Walter Depas .

Paule's work is committed to a late Expressionist style and includes depictions of landscapes and people with motifs etc. a. from Sardinia , Capri and Naples . He was particularly artistically productive in the area of woodcuts .
