In the years of his youth, Castello showed an early interest in art, philosophy and poetry and came into contact with the European avant-garde , which was staying in Capri at the time. At the beginning of the 20th century, his house, the Villa Lina in Anacapri , was a center for the foreign community and intellectuals, a meeting point and contact point for Düsseldorf's cultural circles, as well as for German avant-garde art . Sohn-Rethel recommended the young Castello, who was fascinated by the post-futurists , to leave Capri and study painting in Europe.

During the Düsseldorf period around 1931, Klee and son-Rethel helped the young artist to exhibit in Cologne and Düsseldorf, and through Klee, Castello met Oskar Schlemmer , László Moholy-Nagy and Walter Gropius . After Munich, the next stages in Castello's artistic training were Czechoslovakia, France, Belgium and Holland. In Paris he met Piet Mondrian , who praised his paintings and introduced him to the Parisian avant-garde circles, and at the meetings of Abstraction-Création a long-term friendship with Enrico Prampolini developed .

After the seizure of power by the National Socialists Castello 1934 returned to Capri, was Anton Giulio Bragaglia two in subsequent years to participate exhibitions, the Mostra del Sindacato nazionale fascista di Belle Arti (Exhibition of the Fascist Association of Fine Arts ) loaded. His main works can be seen in the picture galleries of Milan and Rome. Often figurative motifs were the bull and the horse. His brushstrokes are limited to describing the object and his abstract compositions seem to be inspired in their colourfulness by the light, the landscape and the sea of Capri.
