Hans Pichler (mineralogist)

Johann "Hans" Thomas Gustav Pichler (born March 24, 1931 in Ober Hohenelbe , Hohenelbe district ) is a German mineralogist, geologist and volcanologist .

Life

Pichler received his doctorate in 1957 from the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich with a thesis on the Etschtaler Vulkanit-Gruppe (Bozener quartz porphyry) and was then until 1960 a scientific assistant at the Bavarian State Collection and at the Institute for General and Applied Geology at the University of Munich. From 1960 to 1961 he was an assistant at the Paleontological Institute of the University of Zurich and from 1961 to 1963 as a NATO scholarship holder at the then newly founded International Volcano Institute in Catania , Sicily. In 1963/64 he was an assistant at the Geological Institute of the University of Cologne and from 1964 scientific assistant at the Mineralogical Institute of the University of Tübingen , where he qualified as a professor in 1970. In 1973 he became a university lecturer and in 1975 an adjunct professor of mineralogy and petrography. Most recently he was an associate professor.

From the 1960s onwards, Pichler specialized in the volcanic regions of Italy, about which he wrote several volumes for the Geological Guides Collection at Borntraeger Verlag. He also dealt with volcanoes in the Andes (Ecuador, Colombia), the Santorin volcano, volcanoes in the Philippines and Java.

Pichler is a member of the Sudeten German Academy of Sciences and Arts , the New York Academy of Sciences and the Académie royale des Sciences, des Lettres et des Beaux-Arts de Belgique .

He is active in the Heimatkreis Hohenelbe eV as a cultural advisor and is co-editor of various hometown books.
