Hans Röthlisberger (born February 1, 1923 in Langnau im Emmental ; † September 10, 2009 ) was a Swiss glaciologist .

biography

After attending school, he studied petrology at the ETH Zurich , where he worked until he retired in 1987. In 1950 and 1953 he undertook expeditions to Baffin Island , where he carried out seismological soundings on the glaciers . In 1954 he described a new method for determining the size of sediments and sedimentary rocks .

In 1980 he was appointed head of the Glaciology Section of the Laboratory for Hydraulics , Hydrology and Glaciology at ETH Zurich. His main scientific contributions were in the assessment of the dangers emanating from glaciers and in the consideration of the effects of englacial and subglacial meltwater . Among other things, he demonstrated that the rate of melted material due to the frictional heat of the flowing water is equivalent to the rate of the pressure exerted on the drainage channel by overloading the ice.

From 1984 to 1987 Röthlisberger was also President of the International Glaciological Society.

Röthlisberger died on September 10, 2009.
