Hans Riehl (social scientist)

Hans Karl Anton Riehl (born June 7, 1891 in Wiener Neustadt ; † June 5, 1965 in Graz ) was an Austrian economist , sociologist and art historian . As a student of Othmar Spann , he taught at the Karl-Franzens-Universität Graz and the TU Graz , among others , but never received a full professorship. In 1941 he founded the Neue Galerie Graz at the Landesmuseum Joanneum . He also used the pseudonyms Hans Richter and Wigand von Wolfsberg .

Life

After attending school in Wiener Neustadt, Riehl studied philosophy, legal history, art history and archeology at the University of Vienna ; interrupted by military service in the First World War . 1923 doctorate Riehl Doctor of Social Sciences, 1928 Doctor of Philosophy. He also taught at a commercial academy in Vienna. In Graz he completed his habilitation in 1928 in the subject of social studies with a thesis on Johann Gottlieb Fichte .

In 1929/30 Riehl was the head of propaganda for the Federal Association of Austrian Home Guard in Vienna and also published in the publishing house of the Styrian Home Guard in Graz. In the following years, Riehl received several short-term teaching assignments, including at the Montanist Hochschule Leoben . From 1935, through marriage to his daughter Hanna, he was the son-in-law of Anton Apold , the general director of the Alpine Montangesellschaft . Joined the NSDAP in May 1938 , Riehl became an adjunct professor for social studies in Graz in 1938.

In 1941 Hans Riehl founded the Neue Galerie Graz at the Landesmuseum Joanneum in Palais Herberstein in Graz , of which he remained director until 1955. Riehl was also an honorary lecturer in art history at the Technical University. Suspended from duty in 1946, his venia legendi was restricted to the sociology of art . As a private lecturer, he held lectures at Graz University of Technology and Graz University until his death.

Riehl is buried next to his father-in-law Anton Apold in the St. Leonhard Cemetery in Graz .
