Hans Rudolf Zangger (born November 30, 1826 in Mönchaltorf ; † March 6, 1882 in Zurich ) was a Swiss politician and veterinarian . He was primarily responsible for the professionalization of veterinary training in Switzerland.

Life

Professional

Hans Rudolf Zangger studied veterinary medicine at the Veterinary School in Zurich from 1842 to 1845 . In the following year, 1846, he acquired the veterinarian's license. After two years of internship, he traveled from 1848 to 1849 as part of a study visit to the veterinary universities in Toulouse and Lyon .

Back in Zurich, Zangger ran a private practice as a veterinarian. At the same time he was very active and committed to the professionalization of the Zurich Veterinary School and the veterinary profession in general. In 1849 he became editor of the Swiss Veterinary Archives and in 1853 President of the Society of Swiss Veterinarians (GST). In 1856, in addition to his work there as a teacher, Zangger was elected director of the Zurich Veterinary School. He held this office until his death. In this role as director in particular, he had a decisive influence on the training and profession of veterinarians in Switzerland. It is one of his merits that the requirements for the start of studies at the veterinary school increased and the exchange of knowledge among veterinarians was promoted. He also strove to standardize and centralize training throughout Switzerland. However, he did not live to see this wish come true. The veterinary school was also raised to a faculty in 1900.

Zangger was also known beyond the country's borders for his knowledge and publications on cattle and horse breeding as well as epidemic police issues.

From 1866 to 1882 he was the cattle disease commissioner and from 1854 to 1878 the federal chief equine doctor. He also reached the rank of colonel in the Swiss army in 1879 .

He found his final resting place in the Sihlfeld cemetery . His tomb was lifted.

Zangger was a member of the Democratic Party . He was a member of the Zurich Cantonal Council from 1854 to 1878 and 1880 to 1882 . He held the office of President of the Cantonal Council from 1870 and 1877 to 1878. His political career at the national level began with his election to the National Council on December 3, 1866. He initially represented the National Council constituency of Zurich-Southwest , and from 1869 the National Council constituency of Zurich-East . He held this office for nine years until December 5, 1875. This was followed seamlessly by three years in the Council of States from 1875 to 1878. Zangger was particularly committed to the total revision of the Federal Constitution in 1874 and the Factory Act of 1877.
