Hans Süss (organ builder)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hans Süss (also Hans Suys , Hans Svijs , among others; † after 1542 ) was an important German organ builder who created organs for cathedrals and churches, especially in the Rhine area .

Life

Hans Süss probably came from Franconia , because in 1498 he was referred to as Hans von Nürnberg . He then settled in Cologne , where he received citizenship in 1516. Hans von Köln created organs for several important cathedrals and churches between Strasbourg and Amsterdam . He was probably the most innovative and most experimental organ builder of his time, who repeatedly built new voices and registers into the organs, and had this specified in several contracts. His work marked an important transition from the Gothic to the Renaissance organ. Hans Süss probably died around 1542/1543.

List of works (selection)
