Hans Schwarz (born January 5, 1939 in Schwabach ) is a German Evangelical Lutheran theologian.

Live and act

After graduating from high school in Schwabach in 1958, Schwarz studied Protestant theology and English at the universities of Erlangen and Göttingen. In 1963 he passed the regional church examination of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Bavaria and received his doctorate at the same time as the work Understanding the Miracle at Heim und Bultmann (Stuttgart 1966) in Erlangen as a Dr. theol. After completing the preacher's seminar in Nuremberg (1963–64), a one-year study visit at the Oberlin Graduate School of Theology in Ohio, USA, and the vicariate in Erlangen-Bruck , he was ordained in the Bavarian State Church in 1966 and began with the help of a DFG research grant his habilitation on Martin Luther's understanding of nature .

In 1967 he followed a call to the Evangelical Lutheran Theological Seminary in Columbus, Ohio, USA, now Trinity Lutheran Seminary , first as Instructor for Systematic Theology, then Assistant and Associate Professor and finally as the first holder of the Edward C. Fendt Professorship for Systematic Theology . In 1981 he was appointed to the chair for Protestant theology, systematic theology and contemporary theological issues at the University of Regensburg , which he held until his retirement (2004). However, he continues to work at the University of Regensburg, particularly in doctoral training , contacts with foreign universities and courses.

Schwarz held various visiting professorships: 1973/74 at the Augustana University in Neuendettelsau , 1974 at the Pontificia Universita Gregoriana in Rome, 2008 at the Charles University in Prague , and from 1985 to 2008 at the Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary in Columbia, South Carolina, USA where he taught for a semester every other year. Due to his intensive contact with former doctoral students from five continents, he went on many lecture tours and gave hundreds of lectures. Through his book publications, which were mostly in English, he covered the entire spectrum of systematic theology. However, he is particularly interested in the relationship between theology and the natural sciences, the history of theology in the 19th century and the theology of the Reformers. He is a member of the American Academy of Religion , where he serves on the Steering Committees of the 19th Century Theology Group and the Group Lutheran Theologies and Global Lutheranism. From 2000 to 2014 he was the first chairman of the Karl Heim Society , which promotes the dialogue between the natural sciences and theology. Since theology and church belong together for him, he has been a member of the church council of the Neupfarrkirche in Regensburg for many years and preaches there regularly.
