Hans Seyppel (born October 10, 1886 in Düsseldorf, † 1945) was a German painter.

Life

The son of the painter, draftsman and writer Carl Maria Seyppel and his wife Helene, née Brunstering, grew up with four siblings in Düsseldorf. After the father recognized his son's talent early on, he studied at the Düsseldorf Academy under Claus Meyer , who had succeeded Wilhelm Sohn in 1895 , Carl Ederer and Willy Spatz . When the First World War broke out , he was drafted as a soldier, deployed as a company commander and wounded several times. After returning to Düsseldorf, he continued his education as a master student of Franz Kiederich until 1920 .

Hans Seyppel documented the war effort in France , Flanders , Galicia and Russia in 1914/18 in numerous sketchbooks . In search of a motif, he went on study trips to the Lower Rhine, the Netherlands and Waldeck in Hesse ("Landscape near Arolsen", 1930). Further trips took him to Italy and Spain . In early compositions of figurative scenes he was at least thematically based on the tradition of the " Düsseldorfer Malerschule ", such as in "Arrival of the Post Coach before the Village Inn" (1922), while in the painting "The dying forest" (two woodcutters at the Sawing up tree trunks, around 1930/35) with hard contours and subdued colors turned to the factual realism of the time. In addition to pure, contrasting landscape images and figurative compositions, he created partial views of Düsseldorf's old town and its surroundings, such as "Corpus Christi procession in Ratinger Strasse", "Schattiger Garten" and "The old Benrath Bridge", "Altwasser am Rhein" and "Geborgene Stadt" , Portraits (“Mein Freund Otto”, 1930) and depictions of horses. From the 30s - on a public order and together with Willy Reetz - also murals. With Hanns Herkendell (1886–1958) he designed the commemorative publication “25 Years of Michelwerke ”.

In 1940 Hans Seyppel was drafted again as captain and war painter. He died in action during a bomb attack on Düsseldorf in the last days of the war.
