Hans Werner Schmidt (painter)
Hans Werner Schmidt (born October 6, 1859 in Hamburg , † May 31, 1950 in Weimar ) was a German painter , illustrator and etcher . Mainly he created historical pictures of past and contemporary events.
Schmidt grew up as the son of a family of craftsmen in Hamburg and began studying at the art school in Weimar in 1879 . As a student of the painters Albert Brendel and Theodor Hagen , he was appointed master class in 1885 and professor in 1903 . Many of his history paintings deal with Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's life as well as important events in the history of the city of Weimar.
